Trust Speaking Competition Winners Explore London’s Landmarks

On a recent visit to London, the winners of the Aletheia Academies Trust Speaking Competition took part in an educational and inspiring tour of the capital, linking the experience to the theme of public speaking and oracy. Pupils from across the Trust, including Stone St Mary's, Shorne, Sedley’s, St Botolph’s, Holy Trinity, Halling, Cliffe Woods, Saint George’s (Primary Phase), Ditton, and Horton Kirby, were joined by staff for a day of learning and exploration.

The tour was led by our Trust Director of Education, Mr Oldershaw, who guided the group to some of London’s most significant landmarks. These included the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and 10 Downing Street. While the group did not go inside Parliament this year, Mr Oldershaw provided background on each site and explained how they connect to public speaking, debate, and leadership in the UK.

After exploring Westminster, the group boarded a river cruise from Westminster Pier to Greenwich Pier. Along the way, the boat crew highlighted major landmarks such as the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, the Tate Modern, and Canary Wharf, sharing historical facts and stories as they travelled down the Thames.

While waiting to board the train home, Mr Oldershaw ran a quiz based on the day’s activities. It was students vs. teachers, and the students came out on top, showing just how engaged they had been throughout the experience.

Thank you to everyone who helped organise the day, and to all the staff who attended and supported pupils during the trip. Your encouragement and supervision helped make the day run smoothly. A special thanks to Mr Oldershaw for leading the tour and making connections between Oracy and the world around us.

We now look forward to the Grand Final on 2nd July at Saint George’s Primary Phase, where pupils will present their final speeches in front of a panel of judges and their families.
